Travel trailer claim under auto comprehensive?
frustrated rv asked:
Ins says they will cover, authorize a dealer to assess damage then says it's denied. The trailer is covered under our auto policy. It is 7 year old only used about two week a year otherwise keep at home and always maintained. After a period of heavy rain in our area we noted water in a storage compartment, we looked at the damage to repair our selves and since it looked extensive decided to see if the ins co would cover. Adjuster said most likely take it to a dealer, we did, they tore it apart and indicated the roof membrane had failed most likely due to faulty design. The repair cost indicated the trailer is totaled. Adjuster told us the claim handler would contact us on the settlemnt amount. Didn't hear from them for a week, when I finally contacted them they tell me they are denying the claim. After they already sent us the proposed cash value 3 days earlier in the mail. They are now trying to say it is neglect on our part, which is not the case as we have always been conscientious owners of all our property. I think this a breach of implied contract. What really boils me up is that we asked first when we called the company if this was something we should even consider putting a claim in for, having never encountered this situation before and were told that if it wasn't something that would be covered the claim rep or adjuster could tell us so. It would be covered under comprehensive so don't worry about potential rate impact from doing that. They looked at the trailer and told us to take it to a dealer who started to tear it apart, they tore the inside apart to 'assess' the damage. Then they told us it was totaled, come take your stuff out so we can have the salvage people take it away. I'm following up with the company but keep getting tossed around. There's even more involved that I won't go into but it's so frustrating to have try to deal with the beuracracy
It appears that it was not made clear enough. We did inspect and maintain the roof as it was used, along with all the other systems. I also asked the comapny's claim rep whether the age of the trailer would be an issue as to the potential problem, in which case we would not pursue a claim. They told us to pursue the claim, had someone tear it up and then told us they wouldn't cover it. The 'more' that the the claim rep responder refers to has nothing to do with pulling anything over on anyone, more to do with other factors that don't relate to the issue which is a breach of trust or contract. I guess the response shows exactly where my problem is.
Actually I need to clarify it wasn't the claim adjusted who made the accusatory response, her response made sense in a manner. Again, the frustrating part is that there was no real visible damage except for where we found water after heavy rain. If they had said in the beginning this would not be covered, that would have been it, no claim would have been made.We would have dealt with it one way or another, but it own own time, not when we still could have used it for the summer. We can't now since they tore the insides up. Sorry to disapoint you greedy, we pay taxes, insurance and have jobs and don't believe in getting something for nothing. It's unfortunate that you have so little faith in your fellow man, my frustration is in too much beuracracy, the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. I stand by my obligations I hope that others do as well.
I just wanted to update that we did hear bcak from the company and the error was just that, an uniformed rep had been looking at only part of the information and the company is going to be contacting us to resolve. Sometimes it helps to vent, thanks

You should have just taken responsibly to fix a leak in 7 year old trailer instead of trying to get over on your ins.My guess is you mis led the ins. and are not telling us the full ….then they determined it was not anevent that caused leak and dont pay for manufacturers design flaws..sometimes when you try to be greedy, It doesn't always work out in your favor.

Travel trailer have to be resealed every few years. This is considered maintenance. They would not have been able to assess this until it was torn down and able to determine what caused the damage. Some insurance companies will cover the resulting damage but not the cause. The roof is the cause so the replacement of the roof would not be covered. but the inside might be covered. Unfortunately the damage to the roof is wear and tear and fault maintenance as you did not maintain the trailer by having it resealed periodically
