Does anyone know if you can replace a 99 Ford Ranger ECM with a 2000 Ranger ECM?
CDG asked:
My 99 Ranger has a problem with detonation. Because of this I must put in supreme unleaded. An April 2000 technical service bulletin from Ford says that the ECM and ignition module have to be replaced. I have replaced the ignition module but the current, updated ECM is $400 at the dealership and is not available anywhere used. I picked up a 2000 Ranger ECM at an auto salvage yard ( I figured Ford would have the bugs worked out of the ECM by then). Same specs as my truck, 3.0 V-6, 2wd, automatic, flex fuel, etc… anyways I put the 00 ECM in and my truck would not start. I read that ECM's have to be programed to the individual vehicle. If this is true then can I get the 00 ECM to be programed for my 99 Ranger?? If I can then where do I have to go to get it done?? Any information would be appreciated.
Autotech thanks for responding. Are you saying that I can take the 00 ECM to a Ford dealership and then can flash it to fit my 99 ranger?

Unfortunately, it's not as easy as that. Each ECM is flashed to each vehicle. In order for the ecm to work, it would have to have the exact part or calibration number as the original and would have to be re-programed or flashed to your specific vehicle. That would include, but not be limited to VIN # and Mileage.

You have to match the calibration number of the two trucks. If they match then your in business. If you would like, you can get me the Vin of both trucks or the part numbers off the two PCM's and i'll cross them for you!
